The Ishtar Gate was more than 38 feet (12 metres) high and was decorated with glazed brick reliefs, in tiers, of dragons and young bulls. The Ishtar Gate was constructed by the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar II circa 575 BCE. It was the eighth gate of the city of Babylon (in present day Iraq) and was the main entrance into the city. The Ishtar Gate is one of the eight main gates surrounding the inner city of Babylon, capital of the ancient Mesopotamian kingdom of Babylonia. It was the largest and most elaborate of the city’s gateways. The Ishtar Gate was the eighth gate of the city of Babylon (in present day Iraq) and was the main entrance into the great city.

Thought to have been built around 575 BC during the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar II, the gate was dedicated to the Babylonian goddess Ishtar. The Ishtar Gate (today in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin) was the most elaborate of the inner city gates constructed in Babylon in antiquity. The whole gate was covered in lapis lazuli glazed bricks which would have rendered the façade with a jewel-like shine. It was the eighth gate into the city of Babylon, Mesopotamia (modern Babil Governorate, Iraq). The gate was built with glazed bricks and decorated with alternating rows of bas-reliefs of aurochs (representing the god Adad) and dragons (also known as Mušḫuššu or Sirrush which represent the god Marduk). The Ishtar Gate was created in the service of the gods for the divine protection of the city, manifested divine powers on earth as the entry point of the gods into the city, and formed Babylon’s political and religious center.
Hence its name. As part of the city walls of Babylon, the Ishtar Gate was one of the original Seven Wonders of the World. The seven 'gates' Ishtar passes through find their exact counterpart in the gates described in the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead.
